Luke 8:50

New International Version (NIV)

Hearing this, Jesus said to Jairus, “Don’t be afraid; just believe, and she will be healed.”

For Meditation

Every situation in life has the potential to be an opportunity to experience God’s glory. When you walk by faith with Jesus, extraordinary things can happen. The story of Jairus in Luke 8:40-56 shows that when Jesus responds to your call for healing, even death cannot stand in His way. You just have to believe!

His dying daughter needed immediate attention, and the Lord graciously accepted the request to make a house call with Him. The synagogue leader believed in the authority of Jesus over sickness and went on his knees to implore His compassion. So, when the woman with the twelve-year hemorrhage condition interrupted their walk to his home, Jesus knew Jairus was fearful and irritated. His daughter’s situation was dire and needed immediate attention.

Don’t we all go through trepidation when we think the Lord has delayed and fear of the ultimate grips the heart? And the ultimate happened after all.

News from Jairus’ home came at last—his daughter was dead! What’s the use of the Master’s visit? There is no need for the house call unless He wants to sympathize with the family and share their grief. Like Job (Job 3:24), what the synagogue ruler feared most had happened, and that was enough to break the ardent faithful (Luke 8:49). Can you imagine the thoughts that swept through his mind: “If only you had concentrated on my daughter, Master, she would not have died. And that woman, too! Why did she choose only this time to seek the Master’s help? Those witches never take a break.”

You may be among the millions who have felt this way before, those times when your fears have turned into your worst nightmares. What thoughts besieged your mind about God and the people you thought caused your predicament?

Times like that present the Majesty of the Lord brilliantly to warm the hearts of the faithful. Jesus did not allow such destructive thoughts to invade Jairus’ mind and destroy his faith. His calm assurance to Jairus was soothing to the soul.

“Don’t be afraid; just believe, and she will be healed” (Lk. 8:50).

These words have warmed the hearts of saints over the centuries everywhere. They are words He still speaks to His beloved, who trusts Him through their fears. Can you hear Him whisper the same assurance as you struggle with the uncertainties or dreadful news you have received or are expecting?

Jesus knows your anxious thoughts, my friend. He wants you to trust Him for your peace. For, when He finally moves on your situation, He will bring it alive, even if death has laid its icy hands on it and everybody is lamenting for you (51-56). Always remember His rebuke to Martha at the tomb of Lazarus:

“Did I not say to you that if you would believe you would see the glory of God?”  (John 11:40).

Have faith in your Lord, the “Resurrection and the Life,” and keep hope alive because He walks with you.
